Ultrasound imaging is a reliable method for physicians and physical therapists to view how abdominal muscles are supporting the back. This is particularly reliable following back injury or pain, and when abdominals need to be re-strengthened in order to increase back support. To do so, your therapist will can watch how the muscles contract and ensure that the correct contraction is being used. In particular, he or she will make sure the patient activates the deep muscles.
In this video, Dr. Haim Hechtman demonstrates how an ultrasound is conducted on the patient’s abdomen. While the patient contracts the abdominal muscles, he can study whether the correct muscles are being used. With that information, he tailors a strengthening program around that individual’s specific needs.
