Many adults struggle with balance issues as they age. But the good news is, through simple home exercises, you can improve your balance. In this video, Point Performance’s Sandra Lee, DPT demonstrates how to challenge the three balance systems (vision, somatosensory system and vestibular system).
Begin with your feet together and hands on hips. Try to balance. If this is too easy, close your eyes for an added challenge. This removes visual cues, and works the other two systems harder.
Another challenging modification on this activity is to stand with one foot back and one forward with hands on hips. You might feel yourself swaying side to side, but try to remain standing still with your body up tall.
