Trochanteric pain syndrome is a common cause of lateral hip pain due to irritation of structures surrounding the greater trochanter. It often involves the bursa, gluteus medius and minimus tendons, and adjacent soft tissues.
Symptoms
Persistent pain over the outer hip or thigh
Tenderness and swelling near the greater trochanter
Pain worsened by walking, climbing stairs, or lying on the affected side
Possible weakness with hip abduction
Diagnosis
Clinical exam with pain on palpation and resisted hip abduction
Ultrasound or MRI to assess soft tissue pathology
Treatment

Activity modification and avoidance of aggravating positions
NSAIDs and ice
Physical therapy focusing on hip abductor strengthening and biomechanics
