Shoulder Arthritis

What Is It?

Shoulder arthritis involves degeneration or inflammation of the cartilage within the glenohumeral or acromioclavicular joints.

It may result from osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis, or prior trauma.

Symptoms

  • Deep, aching shoulder pain worsened with movement
  • Stiffness and limited overhead motion
  • Grinding or crepitus sensation
  • Localized swelling or tenderness, particularly in AC joint arthritis

Diagnosis

  • Physical exam and symptom review
  • X-rays to assess joint space narrowing and bone spurs
  • MRI or CT in complex or surgical planning cases

Treatment

Conservative Options:

  • NSAIDs and activity modification
  • Physical therapy to maintain motion and strength

Interventional Options:

  • Corticosteroid injections
  • Prolotherapy or PRP injections

Surgical Options:

  • Arthroscopy, joint resurfacing, or total shoulder replacement in advanced cases
