Conditions We Treat
Rotator Cuff Tendinitis
What Is It?
Rotator cuff tendinitis is a condition involving inflammation or degeneration of the tendons of the rotator cuff, a group of four muscles that stabilize and move the shoulder joint.
It commonly develops due to repetitive overhead activity, overuse, poor shoulder mechanics, or age-related tendon changes.
Symptoms
- Pain with reaching overhead, behind the back, or across the body
- Aching discomfort at rest or at night, especially when lying on the affected shoulder
- Shoulder or arm weakness
- Limited range of motion
- Catching or grinding sensation with movement
Diagnosis
Physical examination demonstrating pain with resisted shoulder movements
Review of occupational, athletic, or overuse history
Ultrasound or MRI to assess tendon inflammation, thickening, or tearing
Treatment
Conservative Options:
- Activity modification and rest
- NSAIDs for inflammation and pain relief
- Physical therapy focusing on rotator cuff and scapular stabilizer strengthening
Interventional Options:
- Corticosteroid injections for persistent inflammation
- Shockwave therapy
- Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections
Surgical Options:
- Rarely required but may be considered if symptoms fail to improve
