Conditions We Treat
Kyphosis
What Is It?
Kyphosis is a spinal condition characterized by excessive forward curvature of the thoracic spine, producing a rounded or hunched upper back. Normal thoracic curvature ranges from 20–45 degrees; kyphosis is diagnosed when curvature exceeds this range.
Types include:
- Postural kyphosis (flexible and posture-related)
- Scheuermann’s kyphosis (structural, often seen in adolescents)
- Congenital kyphosis
- Age-related kyphosis due to osteoporosis or compression fractures
Symptoms
- Rounded or hunched upper back
- Fatigue or stiffness in the mid-back
- Back pain after prolonged sitting or standing
- Severe cases may cause breathing difficulty, nerve symptoms, or height loss
Diagnosis
- Physical exam evaluating posture and spinal alignment
- X-rays to measure degree of curvature and structural changes
- MRI or CT scan if spinal cord involvement or fractures are suspected
- Bone density testing in older adults
Treatment
Postural Kyphosis:
- Physical therapy and postural retraining
- Ergonomic modification
Scheuermann’s or Congenital Kyphosis:
- Bracing during growth phases
- Surgery for severe or progressive deformity
Osteoporotic Kyphosis:
- Osteoporosis management
- Vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty for painful fractures
- Fall prevention and core strengthening
