Conditions We Treat
Knee Osteoarthritis
What Is It?
Knee osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint condition in which the cartilage that cushions the knee gradually wears down.
This leads to pain, stiffness, inflammation, and reduced mobility. The condition is common with aging and may be accelerated by prior injury, obesity, malalignment, or repetitive stress.
Symptoms
- Pain with weight-bearing, walking, or prolonged activity
- Morning stiffness or stiffness after sitting
- Swelling around the knee joint
- Limited range of motion
- Crepitus (grinding or popping sensation)
Diagnosis
- Physical exam assessing joint tenderness, motion, and crepitus
- X-rays showing joint space narrowing, osteophytes, and subchondral sclerosis
- MRI if needed to evaluate cartilage, meniscus, or ligaments
Treatment
Conservative Options:
- Weight management and low-impact activity modification
- Physical therapy to improve strength, flexibility, and joint mechanics
- NSAIDs for pain and inflammation
Interventional Options:
- Corticosteroid or hyaluronic acid injections
- Bracing or assistive devices
Surgical Options:
- Partial or total knee replacement in advanced cases
