Hip Osteoarthritis
What Is It?
Hip osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint condition characterized by progressive loss of cartilage within the hip joint. It commonly develops with aging and may be accelerated by prior injury, repetitive stress, or biomechanical abnormalities.
Symptoms
- Deep groin, hip, or thigh pain that may radiate to the knee
- Morning stiffness or stiffness after inactivity
- Reduced range of motion
- Difficulty walking, climbing stairs, or putting on shoes
Diagnosis
- Physical exam assessing gait, pain, and hip motion
- X-rays showing joint space narrowing and osteophyte formation
- MRI rarely needed except to assess cartilage or soft tissues
Treatment
Conservative Options:
- Activity modification and weight management
- Physical therapy focusing on strength and flexibility
- NSAIDs or other pain medications
Interventional Options:
- Intra-articular corticosteroid injections
- Prolotherapy or PRP
