Cervical Strain
What Is It?
Cervical strain refers to soft tissue injury to the muscles or ligaments in the neck, often due to sudden movement, poor posture, or overuse. It is commonly caused by whiplash, prolonged desk work, or minor trauma.
Symptoms
- Neck pain and stiffness
- Muscle spasms or tenderness
- Pain that worsens with movement or sustained positions
- Headaches, often at the base of the skull
Diagnosis
- History and physical exam are usually sufficient
- Rule out more serious injury if trauma is involved
- Imaging (X-ray or MRI) may be considered if symptoms persist or neurologic signs are present
Treatment
Conservative Options:
- Rest and activity modification
- NSAIDs or acetaminophen for pain
- Heat or cold therapy
- Physical therapy: stretching, strengthening, posture correction
Interventional Options:
- Trigger point injections
- Prolotherapy
- Manual therapy or massage for muscle tension
- Acupuncture or shockwave therapy
