Conditions We Treat
Cervical Herniated Disc
What Is It?
A cervical herniated disc occurs when the inner gel-like nucleus of a spinal disc pushes through the outer layer, pressing on adjacent nerves or the spinal cord. This can result from degeneration, trauma, or repetitive strain.
Symptoms
- Neck pain often radiating to the arm
- Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the shoulder, arm, or hand
- Worsening symptoms with neck movement or coughing
- Muscle spasms and limited range of motion
Diagnosis
- Physical exam: neurologic signs in the affected dermatome/myotome
- MRI is the gold standard to visualize disc herniation
- Nerve conduction studies/EMG may assess nerve irritation in chronic cases
Treatment
Conservative Options:
- NSAIDs, activity modification, and physical therapy
- Cervical traction or posture training
Interventional Options:
- Epidural steroid injection for persistent nerve-related pain
Surgical Options:
- Surgical intervention (e.g., discectomy) if severe or progressive symptoms occur
