Conditions We Treat
Cervical Facet Arthritis
What Is It?
Cervical facet arthritis is degeneration or inflammation of the facet joints in the cervical spine. These small joints stabilize the neck and allow controlled motion. Over time, wear-and-tear from aging, repetitive strain, or poor posture can lead to osteoarthritic changes, joint stiffness, and chronic neck pain.
Symptoms
- Localized neck pain, often worse in the morning or after inactivity
- Pain increased with neck extension, rotation, or prolonged posture
- Referred pain to the shoulders or upper back
- Neck stiffness and reduced mobility
Diagnosis
- Physical exam showing facet tenderness and pain with movement
- X-rays demonstrating joint space narrowing or osteophytes
- MRI or CT to assess inflammation and rule out disc pathology
- Diagnostic facet joint injections may confirm the pain source
Treatment
Conservative Options:
- NSAIDs, activity modification, and posture training
- Physical therapy for mobility, strength, and alignment
Interventional Options:
- Facet joint corticosteroid injections for targeted relief
- Shockwave therapy, prolotherapy, or PRP
Advanced Options:
- Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for longer-term pain relief in persistent cases
