Ankle Arthritis
What Is It?
Ankle arthritis is the degeneration of cartilage in the ankle joint, often due to post-traumatic osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or age-related wear and tear. It leads to pain, stiffness, and functional limitation.
Symptoms
- Deep ankle pain with weight-bearing
- Stiffness and reduced range of motion
- Swelling around the joint
- Grinding or catching sensation
- Symptoms worsen with activity and improve with rest
Diagnosis
- Physical exam: Range of motion, swelling, joint line tenderness
- X-rays: Show joint space narrowing, bone spurs, or deformity
- MRI or CT scan: If needed for surgical planning or to assess surrounding soft tissues
Treatment
Conservative Options:
- Activity modification
- NSAIDs and occasional corticosteroid injections
- Ankle brace or supportive footwear
- Physical therapy to improve mobility and strength
- Orthotics for unloading affected joint surfaces
Surgical Options:
- Arthroscopy, ankle fusion, or total ankle replacement in advanced cases
