Subacromial Bursitis

What Is It?

Subacromial bursitis is inflammation of the bursa located between the rotator cuff and the acromion.

It often occurs alongside impingement syndrome or rotator cuff pathology.

Symptoms

  • Lateral shoulder pain, especially with arm elevation
  • Tenderness over the outer shoulder
  • Pain with activities such as combing hair or reaching overhead
  • Night pain in some cases

Diagnosis

  • Clinical exam showing pain through the arc of motion
  • Special tests to rule out rotator cuff tears
  • Ultrasound or MRI to confirm bursal inflammation

Treatment

Conservative Options:

  • Rest, activity modification, and posture correction
  • NSAIDs and ice therapy
  • Physical therapy to improve shoulder mechanics

Interventional Options:

  • Corticosteroid injection into the subacromial space
  • Shockwave therapy or PRP Therapy

Surgical Options:

  • Rarely required
