Conditions We Treat
Adhesive Capsulitis (Frozen Shoulder)
What Is It?
Adhesive capsulitis, commonly known as frozen shoulder, is a condition characterized by thickening and tightening of the shoulder joint capsule.
This leads to progressive pain and significant loss of motion and typically occurs in phases known as freezing, frozen, and thawing.
Symptoms
- Gradual onset of shoulder pain, often worse at night
- Progressive stiffness with limited motion in all directions
- Difficulty with dressing, reaching overhead, or lifting
- Symptoms that may persist for months to over a year
Diagnosis
- Physical examination revealing limited active and passive range of motion
- Medical history including diabetes or thyroid disease
- Imaging to exclude other shoulder pathology
Treatment
Conservative Options:
- NSAIDs and pain management strategies
- Physical therapy focusing on gentle stretching and mobility
Interventional Options:
- Corticosteroid injections
- Ultrasound-guided hydrodistension
Surgical Options:
- Manipulation under anesthesia or arthroscopic capsular release in severe cases
