Diagnostic Ultrasound

    Home Diagnostic Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a safe imaging tool that is used in the clinic to examine muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves in the body. Ultrasound can also look at swelling or inflammation in joints. Ultrasound is used in the clinic, while examining a patient to look through the skin to determine if there is an injury where the patient may be reporting pain. There have been many studies comparing ultrasound to MRI for examining injuries and it many cases it is as accurate as a MRI.

Advantages of ultrasound is it is affordable, can be performed in the clinic, allows for a physician to visualize an injury where the patient is having pain, and image the patient while the patient is moving their extremities to help visualize what could be the cause of their pain. Ultrasound is used in the clinic to evaluate shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee, ankle, and foot injuries.

    Areas of use:

    • Shoulder
    • Elbow
    • Wrist/Hand
    • Hip
    • Knee
    • Ankle/Foot

    Interventional Procedures using Ultrasound

In addition to using ultrasound to diagnose an injury, ultrasound helps physicians provide accurate placement for injections. In many studies, performing injections under ultrasound is more accurate and more effective than performing injections without ultrasound.

    Certifications in Diagnostic Ultrasound

Physicians who have performed many diagnostic ultrasounds, are eligible for a certification in diagnostic ultrasound which is the RMSK certification. This certification demonstrates that certain physicians are credible and have demonstrated that they have the knowledge and skillset to properly diagnose injuries using ultrasound. Below is some information on this certification and Dr. Marc Gruner is one of the few physicians in the DC area who holds this certification.

    Registered in Musculoskeletal Sonography (RMSK)

    Issued by APCA

The Registered in Musculoskeletal sonography (RMSK) certification raises the standard of musculoskeletal ultrasound practice worldwide and promotes best practices for enhanced patient safety. By earning the musculoskeletal ultrasound certification, physicians gain a critical edge in promoting public safety in musculoskeletal ultrasound.
